Well, my Nikon D40 is on the way. I bought it from someone but she only sold me the body, leaving me free to select a lens. Since I only have barrel scrapings left to spend, can y'all please give me some suggestions on what to purchase? Should I go with the 18-55 or the 50 mm 1.8?
Do I need to add anything else to that to actually start?
Yes, I know...green as a cucumber here...I'll get there.

Definitely the 50mm 1.8. You will appreciate the 1.8 FAR more than the wide angle.
Constructive Critism is always welcome. I am here to learn so let me know how I can do better.

I have to disagree. I love the 50mm, but if my only lens would not autofocus... I'd probably throw my camera.
JMO.
i agree. If you only have one lens, it would be good to have one that autofocuses.

I didn't realize the 1.8 doesn't autofocus. In that case I would go for one that does autofocus. You will lose too many pics of faster subjects with no autofocus.
Thank you for the replies!
I already learned something--I didn't realize that the 1.8 doesn't autofocus, either!
Yep another vote for the 50mm

It is not the lens it the the camera body (D40) will only let you use the lens in manual
