With Mother's Day and my birthday coming up, I figured I'd ask for some camera accessories. Can anyone recommend a tripod that they like or that they lust after? Links would be great too. I'm not sure what to look for in a tripod. I know I want one that stands on the ground, not a table top tripod. Thanks so much for any input you can share!

I'm interested in tripod rec's too. I've got a horrible one that we've had for years so I'd really like something better.

Maybe I should also ask about what tripods to avoid since it looks like you aren't the only one unhappy with your tripod.
I guess its easier to give tripod recommendations with a price range.... :) and what you will be using it for too. If its just an occasional indoor family shot, you could more easily go with a cheaper model because it won't be on uneven outdoor surfaces, like if you wanted to shoot landscapes and wildlife, kwim? :)
Many photographers believe you should never put your expensive camera on "cheap" stabilization. LOL so you could find suggestions for tripods that start in the 200s to 300s all the way up to 1000s. But in many people's opinions if its for indoor use only, and only occasionally, you should be fine with like a lower end sunpack. They really make a great tripod! I am sure you will have more people chiming in after we hear what you want to use your tripod for and a maybe a price range. A lot of people don't know how crazy expensive a tripod can get. :)

Hmm, as far as price range, I was thinking around $100 or less. Sounds like there are lots of price options. I'm not sure what my purposes for it will be yet, mainly to keep the camera steady as I tend to have a shaky hand at times. I'd like to be able to use it both indoors and out. I know my dad has a tripod that he used for when he would do video work, but I would assume tripods for video and tripods for still photography are different. His tripod seemed to have all kinds of adjustability with it and folded up to be really compact for transporting it.
Would anyone reccomend a monopod over a tripod? They seem less clunky, easier to set up, so I would be more likely to actually bring it with me. Unlike my tripod (which is a older boden and fairly nice) which just sits in the closet and right now I am not even sure which closet :).
Constructive Critism is always welcome. I am here to learn so let me know how I can do better.

I'm also interested in a monopod recommendation. My arm gets tired holding my big lens for hours at games, I think a monopod would still allow me to move around.

I only use a monopod for heavy lenses--like 50-500mm or 70-200 for longer periods of time. For long exposures, I use a tripod.
A video tripod would probably work fine for a camera, but it could end up weighing more since its probably designed to hold more weight.
I think Melissa got a good sunpack for 30-40 dollars and she said it feels very durable/stable. Sounds great to me!
The one I got was around $125 and feels very sturdy - Manfrotto 190xb I think it was?
We got a monopod for when we went to Alaska last summer. My hands shake a lot and I feel like the monopod doesn't do enough and is kind of a PITA. If I'm going to go to the trouble of carrying some kind of 'pod, I'd rather have a tripod. A monopod is smaller and lighter, but not by all that much, IMO.

i have both tripod and monopod (manfrotto) and tend to use my monopod more than the tri..
i don't use them a whole lot, but am not starting to use my monopod as a lightstick as well.
as tami stated though- i would be one to say that i don't want to put my gear on something cheap. :)
